As described by the artist Martina Johnson-Allen, "The work of art entitled The Seven Crones is a three-dimensional high relief mixed media structure which pays homage to the developmental stages and life experience of women as they move toward ultimate wisdom and perfection." The structure of the sculpture is made from four-ply museum board covered with several colors of book cloth. The object opens and closes to provide an exterior and interior space, with each side featuring a soft human figure sculpture called a "Crone." The Crones are surrounded by compartments, shelves, and moldings housing a variety of cloth bundles, jars, masks, and sacks. Johnson-Allen intends that the object is a"work of art, when initially approached closed, evoking an element of mystery therefore encouraging the viewer to manipulate its form to discover what is inside." This project is both a collaboration with Johnson-Allen in the form of an artist interview and a collaboration with the stakeholders at The African American Museum in Philadelphia.
